Despite the museum's precise title pertaining to its collection of the entire biblical works of the late Belarusian painter Marc Chagall, the museum now also houses many of the artist's non-biblical canvases. This is the largest monographic exhibition of his work and is now often referred to simply as 'Musée National Marc Chagall'.
Constructed while the artist was still alive and residing in the Côte d'Azur, the museum's collection originally derived from a donation by the artist himself which Chagall continued to enrich until his 1988 death. The geometrical building which houses the collection was designed by André Hermant (famous for his collaborations with Le Corbusier), with Chagall providing the stained glass for the museum's amphitheatre. The highlight of the museum however is the titular 'Message Biblique', the thematic collection of 17 paintings that depict passages from the Genesis, Exodus and Song of Songs books of the Old Testament.
