No night camping, staying at Triund now

As per the state government’s order, night camping and staying will no longer be allowed at Triund. Set in the Dhauladhar range of the Himalayas, Triund is one of the most popular treks in the region. A comparatively easy hike, it has been reeling under adverse effects of tourism, seeing an onrush of tourists and related commercialisation. Reportedly, there were more than 2000 people camping on the last new year’s eve. A steady drove of tourists flock to it, especially in summers, thus leading to the said ban.
The new orders are against any overnight camping and staying on the hilltop to let the area stay ecologically balanced. Reportedly, more than 20 eateries and shops mushroomed on the trek over the past years, in addition to a number of stay options, thus making it more of a picnic spot. An attempt to bar people from staying at Triund during nighttime was also made in 2018, which failed with a number of tourists pitching their camps anyway. It was reported that one of the caves en route was also converted into a food stall.

Now, the hikers to Triund can opt for a day trek, and returning on the same day is made compulsory. The ban has also led to the closure of all the shops, eateries on the way, leaving just one of those open. Those interested in the hike need to carry eatables and any such required item from the base itself. So yes, if a hike to Triund is on your mind, brace yourself to come back the same day
