Built in the mid-18th century, the tomb of Awadh’s viceroy Safdarjung appears to be a smaller and less grand version of Humayun’s Tomb. Built by his son Nawab Shuja-ud-daulah, it was in fact constructed in a straight line from Mughal emperor Humayun’s mausoleum and modelled after the Taj Mahal. The central domed mausoleum is also surrounded by charbagh-style gardens and fountains, and several smaller pavilions and palaces.
