Amritsar is the spiritual centre of Sikhism, and Harmandir Sahib, more widely known as the Golden temple, embodies the values the religion stands for. This sikh shrine pulls in over 100,000 visitors in just a week; even more than the Taj Mahal. The Gurdwara was completed in 1604 AD after commissioned by the 5th Guru of the Sikhs. Over the decades it has been renovated and added to, with the most significant addition being the gold facing which was added in the early 19th century by Maharaja Ranjit Singh.
