Tamil Nadu is known for its spiritual heritage, and the Perur Pateeswarar Temple dedicated to Shiva is a fine example of it. Located at Perur in western Coimbatore, this temple was built by Karikaala Chozhan, and was patronised by poets such as, Arunagiri Nathar and Kachiappa Munivar. With a history dating back to 1500 years, the deity here is believed to have self emerged, which makes this like no other. The ornate structure includes several spirals and halls, and the golden statue of Nataraja here is a big draw. There are several pillars here with intricate carvings that depict the various manifestations of Shiva. Do not forget to observe the ceiling that has a series of stone chains and a lotus at the centre. The temple tank has symmetrical steps with 16 angles, and the temple cars have fine wooden carvings that are rare and unique. This temple also has the Patti Vinayagar shrine of the much loved Lord Ganesha, and the Arasambalavanar Shrine dedicated to Shiva. The Arasambalavanar Shrine is believed to be the location where Shiva had performed his thandav under a Peepul tree. Apart from this, you will also see several statues of other Gods and Goddesses, along with many sacred palm and tamarind trees. If you visit in the month of March, you will find this place to be the centre of varied religious activities, due to the annual Panguni Uthram festival.
