All art connoisseurs visiting Lucerne throng to the heart of the city in order to see the Museum Sammlung Rosengart, an establishment that houses the acquisitions of Angela Rosengart and her father Siegfried Rosengart. Pablo Picasso’s acquaintance and muse, Angela, was an art dealer who was enthralled by the works of the Spanish artist along with those by greats like Matisse, Monet, Chagall, Leger, Renoir and Kandinsky. While the collection is an illustration of the personal choices of the collector, it is rich and impressive in ways like no other. This artistic paradise owns a few hundred watercolours and drawings spanning several periods with some 180 of these masterpieces belonging to Picasso and 125 that can be attributed to Paul Klee. Interestingly, all of Picasso’s works date back to 1938 as this museum is a more recent phenomenon in Lucerne. In fact, it was previously known as the Picasso Museum.Angela Rosengart was quite a philanthropist and established the Rosengart Foundation in 1992 in order to make this vast collection of art accessible to the public. Expect to spend a good 90 min inside the museum. English guides are available here.
