What’s inside Meghalaya’s Mawsmai Cave?

We are talking about the amazing caves of Meghalaya as attractions. One such cave is the Mawsmai Cave in Cherrapunji. Some of India’s longest, largest and deepest caves are in Meghalaya. There are more than 1500 caves in Meghalaya and around 980 of these have been explored. Mawsmai Cave is one of them.
Mawsmai Cave is locally known as Krem Mawsmai.

Trek to Mawsmai Cave
To get to Mawsmai Cave, you will have to do a short trek through a dense forest. Don’t let this intimidate you, the forest walk is pretty doable and pleasant.
Mawsmai as a tourist attraction
Mawsmai is one of the popular attractions in Cherrapunji. The cave, when compared to the world’s longest cave Krem Liat Prah, is very small. Where Krem Liat Prah may seem daunting, Mawsmai is quite doable even for beginners. Visitors will need to pay a sum of INR 20. An extra sum of INR 20 will be charged for the camera.
Exploring Mawsmai Cave
Inside the cave, only a distance of 150 m is open for tourists. Rest of the cave system is off-limits. While exploring the cave, watch out for the low overhangs and uneven surface on the floor of the cave.
Accessibility
Mawsmai Cave boasts of a large entrance. Once inside, it can quickly become a tight squeeze in some places. Some stretches will even make you crawl. The cave is open daily from 9am to 5:30 pm.
What’s inside Mawsmai Cave?
Mawsmai Cave is popular for fossils. To be able to see these fossils (embedded sea organisms), you will need to study the cave walls and various formations. The cave floor has rivulets running through it.
