The team examined the location and verified the quality and importance of the fossils with the assistance of fossil specialists such as Lorenzo Marchetti from the Natural History Museum in Berlin and Ausonio Ronchi from the University of Pavia. Ronchi referred to the discoveries as "rich" and emphasised the exceptional preservation of the fossils, which included plant imprints, animal footprints, and invertebrate tracks. In order to safeguard the prints, the fossils were kept in layers of sand and clay that solidified over time.
The team warns that studying these ancient ecosystems offers valuable lessons for the world today. As the past reveals the consequences of environmental shifts, we are reminded of the risks posed by our current climate trajectory. The melting ice not only reveals the past but also serves as a stark reminder of the dangers we face in preserving our planet’s future.
