Red alert issued as Cyclone Fengal set to make landfall along Tamil Nadu’s southeastern coast

The deep depression over the Southwest Bay of Bengal has now intensified into Cyclone Fengal and is expected to make landfall along Tamil Nadu’s southeastern coast on Friday, November 29. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of heavy rainfall, strong winds, and rough sea conditions that could severely impact coastal districts.

As per reports, as of Wednesday morning, the cyclone was located about 130 km east-southeast of Trincomalee in Sri Lanka, 400 km southeast of Nagapattinam, and 590 km south-southeast of Chennai. It has also been reported that the cyclone is currently moving north-northwest at a speed of 13 kmph, and is expected to gain strength, with wind speeds reaching up to 85 kmph as it nears land.



Coastal areas brace for impact

The IMD has issued a red alert for Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Thiruvarur, and Karaikal. Residents have been warned of torrential rainfall and possible flooding in low-lying areas. If reports are to go by, heavy rains accompanied by thunderstorms are also expected in places like Chennai, Puducherry, Chengalpattu, Villupuram, Cuddalore, and Thanjavur.

The weather department has also predicted light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms in interior districts like Coimbatore, Madurai, and Thoothukudi. Fishermen have been advised to stay ashore as the Bay of Bengal is experiencing “very rough sea conditions” with dangerously high waves.

Schools and colleges closed

To ensure safety, schools and colleges in several districts, including Chennai, Trichy, Nagapattinam, Cuddalore, and Puducherry, were declared closed.


Preparedness measures in full swing


As per reports, disaster management teams have been deployed to vulnerable areas, and shelters have been readied to accommodate evacuees. Supplies of food, water, and medical aid are being stocked in affected districts to minimise disruptions.

Authorities in the Cauvery delta region have been advised to remain on high alert. Residents are also advised to stay at home, and avoid all unnecessary travel, as transportation services may face interruptions due to the cyclone.

Rain and thunderstorms

Apart from coastal regions, other parts of Tamil Nadu will also feel the impact of the cyclone. For places like Sivagangai, Perambalur, and Kallakurichi, moderate to heavy rainfall is predicted. These areas, along with other neighbouring areas are likely to experience thunderstorms and lightning. Residents are also advised to be prepared for localised flooding.
