Traffic alert: Delhi Police announces road closures for Narendra Modi's swearing-in ceremony

Narendra Modi is set to be sworn in for his third consecutive term as Prime Minister on Sunday, June 9. The grand swearing-in ceremony will commence at 7:15 pm at Rashtrapati Bhavan's Forecourt.

In light of the event, the Delhi traffic police have issued an advisory, warning commuters of road closures and diversions across the national capital. Deputy Commissioner of Police, Traffic, Prashant Gautam, stated that nearly 1,100 traffic personnel have been deployed and are fully briefed on the arrangements. Special provisions have also been made for foreign delegates and heads of state attending the ceremony.

Several roads, including Sansad Marg, North Avenue Road, South Avenue Road, Kushak Road, Rajaji Marg, Krishna Menon Marg, Talkatora Road, and Pt Pant Marg, will be closed from 2 pm to 11 pm on Sunday. No vehicles will be allowed to halt or park near Imtiaz Khan Marg, Rakab Ganj Road, Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Marg, Pandit Pant Marg, and Talkatora Road. All DTC buses will be restricted from plying on the roads surrounding Rashtrapati Bhavan. Vehicles parked on restricted roads will be towed and fined for improper parking and disobedience of lawful instructions.


Traffic diversions will be implemented as necessary at key points including Patel Chowk, Rail Bhawan, Roundabout Gurudwara Rakab Ganj, Gole Dakhana, Roundabout RML, and several others. Commuters are advised to avoid routes such as Sansad Marg, Imtiaz Khan Marg, Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Marg, Pandit Pant Marg, Rajaji Marg, Tyagraj Marg, and Akbar Road.



Prior to the ceremony, PM Modi will visit Raj Ghat at 6:30 am, followed by the ‘Sadaiv Atal’ memorial at 7 am and the War Memorial at 7:30 am. Heavy commercial vehicles and other traffic will be restricted on several routes from 6:45 am to 8:45 am, including IP Marg, Bahadurshah Zafar Marg, Jawaharlal Nehru Marg, and Mahatma Gandhi Marg between IP Flyover and Shanti Van to Y-Point.

Security has been significantly heightened in the capital, with special measures in place for the event, which will see over 8,000 guests in attendance, including leaders from neighboring countries such as Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Nepal, Mauritius, Maldives, and Seychelles, aligning with India’s 'Neighbourhood First' policy.


The public is advised to stay informed about the traffic updates and plan their travel accordingly to avoid inconvenience during the swearing-in ceremony.
