Travel advisory: Kerala on high alert as Cyclone Beruvi nears

The Indian Meteorological Department has announced formation of Cyclone Beruvi over the Southern coasts of Kerala as well Tamil Nadu. The cyclone has been forming over the Southwest Bay of Bengal and is expected to make landfall on Friday. Both the states have been put on high alert in anticipation of the same. While inter-state travel has resumed in the country, it is advisable that all non-essential travel be put on hold till the cyclone intensity sees a decrease.

As per the IMD announcements, Cyclone Beruvi will intensify further and will probably cross the Sri Lankan coast around Wednesday. IMD, taking note of the development, has issued a red alert across four districts in Kerala, namely Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha and Pathanamthitta. Further, orange alert has been issued three more districts, namely Kottayam, Ernakulam and Idukki. All these districts and the surrounding region is expected to see isolated to heavy rainfall in the coming days.
Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan has assured that the state government is prepared to tackle any eventuality related to Cyclone Beruvi. He commented on the same, stating that "All government departments have been directed to do preparations on war footing. We will get to know more about the impact of the cyclone in the coming hours. We are preparing to handle the situation."
