Speaking of Unakoti as a place of pilgrimage, the word Unakoti translates to one less than a crore in the local language. As per the legends, there are 99,99,999 carvings at the site. The most notable feature of Unakoti is a series of bas-relief carvings of Hindu deities like Shiva, Ganesha, Durga and other mythological figures. The central figure is a colossal image of Shiva known as Unakotiswara Kal Bhairava.
Unakoti is not only a significant religious site but also a place of archaeological and historical importance. It draws tourists, pilgrims, and researchers interested in exploring the rich cultural heritage of the region.
As of now, the site has been recognised as a national heritage monument and also finds a spot in UNESCO’s Tentative List.
