Why it’s dangerous to travel to these 8 tourist destinations now
India is currently experiencing an extended monsoon season, with several places getting heavy rainfall. These extreme weather conditions make travel not only risky and unpredictable, but inconvenient too. In several places, heavy downpours are causing severe flooding, landslides, and road blockages. In the case of urban areas, the problem of waterlogging and long hours of being stuck in a traffic jam is all too real. In the case of hilly terrain, there is always the danger of landslides that often cut off access to connecting towns and villages. During monsoon, riverbanks also swell up, leaving low-lying areas submerged. So before planning a trip, it’s crucial for travellers to be aware of the potential dangers.
02
Kerala
The monsoon hits Kerala with force, leading to frequent flooding and landslides, especially in its hill stations like Munnar and Wayanad. Roads are often blocked, making travel highly unpredictable.
03
Maharashtra
Avoid coastal Maharashtra during the monsoon season. These areas experience very heavy rainfall. Mumbai and the Western Ghats regions experience severe waterlogging, flooding, and frequent landslides. If you are in the cities, travel can get problematic due to waterlogging and several hours of traffic jams.
04
Assam
Monsoon floods in Assam are an annual concern, especially around the Brahmaputra River. Many areas are submerged during the season, making both road and rail travel challenging and risky. Tourist attractions like Kaziranga and Manas also remain closed due to heavy rainfall.
05
Meghalaya
With some of the highest rainfall in the world, Meghalaya’s famed destinations like Cherrapunji and Mawsynram become extremely dangerous to visit during monsoon. It becomes difficult to find transportation on rainy days. If you are visiting these places during monsoon season, especially when the rainfall is very heavy, chances of getting stuck in isolated places increases
06
Bihar
Floods wreak havoc in Bihar, particularly in its northern regions. Rivers overflow, submerging vast areas, making it nearly impossible to travel safely, as villages and roads are often underwater
07
Uttarakhand
Uttarakhand's mountain terrain is not new to landslides and flash floods during monsoon. Pilgrimage routes like Kedarnath and Badrinath often face closures due to dangerous landslides. Rivers swell up and become risky for any adventure activities.
08
West Bengal
The northern hills of West Bengal, including Darjeeling and Kalimpong, are notorious for landslides during the monsoon. The Teesta river swells and any activities near the river become dangerous. The plains, including Kolkata, face regular flooding and waterlogging during the season.
09
Nagaland
The hilly regions of Nagaland face increased risks during the monsoon, with landslides cutting off vital routes between towns like Dimapur and Kohima. And this is a recurring problem. These landslides isolate several nearby areas in the process, making travel of any kind nearly impossible.
