First announced in January 2021, the deep-water standing surf wave pool is part of a recreational project by Wai Kai, named The LineUp. The said project involved 52 acres of the recreational lagoon and money invested in it was roughly around $40 million.
Reports add that that water used for the pool was taken from the aquifer, a resource that's become increasingly fragile on the island, as recent wide-scale water contamination events and environmental issues have strained locals' ability to access fresh water for their basic day-to-day needs.
This has also raised concern among the locals, as the region is undergoing a grave water crisis.
Referring to this, a source in the know-how added that the said wave pool operates under the same rules as swimming pools in Hawaii and thus, it’s regularly tested and treated as required by the Hawaii State Department of Health.
