America’s Got Talent faces age restriction debate after 10-year-old contestant Pranysqa Mishra’s heartbreaking performance
"America’s Got Talent," a widely-watched and cherished talent competition in the USA, has entered its 19th season. However, the show has faced criticism for not enforcing stricter age restrictions for participants. This issue resurfaced following the September 11 performance of 10-year-old vocalist Pranysqa Mishra. Mishra, a nine-year-old of Indian origin from Florida, struggled during her performance of "High Hopes," with off-pitch notes and lack of experience evident, making the semifinals episode particularly disappointing.
Despite the performance challenges, Mishra looked adorable in her outfit, and her grandmother, her biggest inspiration, was present for support. Contestants on the show must adhere to rigorous schedules, including early mornings and continuous shooting, which can be overwhelming, especially for children who lack experience.
Mishra had previously received the Golden Buzzer from Heidi Klum during the auditions, with Klum praising her for the memorable moment she provided. Howie Mandel described her vocals as “the voice of an angel” with remarkable power and poise, Sofia Vergara lauded her confidence, and Simon Cowell commended her bravery in tackling such a challenging song. Although Mishra’s performance sparked discussions about age restrictions on the show, she was not the youngest performer ever.
That distinction belongs to Devan, a two-year-old who showcased his algebra skills during his audition. The oldest participant in the show's history was burlesque dancer Penny Starr Sr., who competed in Season 17 at the age of 88 before being eliminated during the Deliberations. Penny, an inductee into the Burlesque Hall of Fame, continues to perform annually at Exotic World in Las Vegas.
