"Skins was like — oh boy, it's kind of like the little rash that won't go away," he quipped, only to correct himself.

"No, no, no." Look, man, it was awesome. You look at the guys that came out of it — Nick Hoult, Kaya Scodelario — it's really remarkable," the 34-year-old said of his co-stars on the program, which ran from 2007 to 2013.

"I didn't have a clue what I was doing when I was plucked off of the street to be in that thing," said the actor.

Skins follows a group of teenagers in England, exploring themes similar to those found in American teen dramas such as drugs, sex, and self-discovery. MTV attempted a US version of the show in 2011, but it was cancelled after one season.

Patel said of the original U.K. cast, which included Daniel Kaluuya, Hannah Murray, and Joe Dempsie, "We all stay in touch."

While it may not have been his favourite era of his career, the Oscar nominee expressed gratitude for the opportunity.

"Without it, there would be no me in Slumdog Millionaire, without Danny Boyle's daughter being a Skins fan," he said of his big film part from 2008. "All of these things, even up until Monkey Man, they're lily pads."
