Sarah Michelle Gellar, best known for her iconic role in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, has hinted that she might be open to stepping back into the character’s shoes after years of saying no. During a recent appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show, the 47-year-old actress reflected on the possibility of a revival, much to the excitement of fans.
“It’s funny. I always used to say no, because it’s in its bubble, and it’s so perfect,” Gellar explained. “But watching revivals like Sex and the City’s [And Just Like That] and Dexter: Original Sin made me realize there are ways to revisit stories. It definitely gets your mind thinking, ‘Well, maybe.’” Gellar, who is set to star in the upcoming Dexter prequel, shared her thoughts on how a Buffy reboot could work. “It could be anything,” she said. “It’s a universe. And it makes you realize that in this world, we need those heroes, I think, more so than ever.”
Her new openness marks a shift from her previous stance. In 2022, Gellar told SFX Magazine that she didn’t see herself reprising the role. “I am very proud of the show that we created, and it doesn’t need to be redone. We wrapped that up,” she said, per Movieweb.
While she was hesitant to return, Gellar expressed her support for the franchise to continue with a new lead. “I am all for them continuing the story because there’s the story of female empowerment,” she said. “I love the way the show was left: ‘Every girl who has the power can have the power.’ It’s set up perfectly for someone else to have the power.”
Her comments leave the door open for a new chapter in the Buffy universe, giving fans hope that their favorite Slayer’s legacy could continue in fresh and exciting ways.
