Daily soaps on Hindi general entertainment channels going off-air is not exactly a new phenomenon and doesn’t come as surprise anymore to viewers. Typically, no thanks to the fractured viewership pattern, Hindi GECs tend to pull off shows when they fail to deliver the requisite numbers. From lead actors quitting shows, falling sick or the storylines having ‘run it’s course’ Hindi soaps now come with an expiry date depending solely on their ability to connect with the audiences. What do producers have to say when the Hindi GECs pull the plug on their respective shows barely weeks after their launch, without even giving it enough time to settle on the screen and connect with the audience? Producer Sukesh Motwani says, “Most of the time showmakers and channel don’t want to stretch the storylines meaninglessly and end the soap when the going’s good. In case of 'Nisha Aur Uske Cousins', we (the makers) and the channel, felt that turning our show into a typical saas-bahu show or giving it a time leap would have been totally pointless considering the young feel of the show would have been completely marred. In the current situation, hardly two out of 20 shows make it to the 500 episode mark.” Arvind Babbal, producer of the seven month old 'Mahakumbh...' that wraps up this week says, “It is better to have a defined storyline. Stretching any show beyond a point makes it meaningless for the audience and the show’s producers. If we made Mahakumbh an infinite series, it would have lost its charm.”
Do actors feel that some concrete time must be given to shows to prove their worth to the target audience? As Chandni Bhagwanani shares, “It’s really sad that lots of shows are ending abruptly because of poor TRPs. Shows take time to make an impact with the audience, so instead of pulling the plug off, the channel should give new shows some more time to settle.”
However in the soapy world where TRPs decide ad revenue, numbers are important for survival of any show and nothing can change that!
Dil Ki Baatein.. Dil Hi Jaane Air time: 4 months / Ongoing
In spite of having a strong cast of Ram Kapoor, Pankaj Dheer, Gurdeep Punj and Sai Deodhar and a creative supervision of Vikram Bhatt, the show simply didn’t connect with the audience. News is that the channel plans to end the show in the near future.
Warrior High Air time: 5 months
Even an interesting campus tale with oodles of cutsie moments between the couples, could not help grab enough attention for the show. The show’s makers feel there’s isn’t enough storyline to continue. The only heartening news is that a second season is being planned for the show.
Servicewali Bahu Air time: 5 months
This could have been a typical story of women empowerment, about a working girl whose greedy in-laws saw her as a ‘living dowry’ and had plenty of fodder for melodrama. An early prime time slot and a not too impressive cast got the show poor TRPs and an early exit date.

The story started off on an interesting note with a Varanasi girl making it big as a fashion entrepreneur in Paris, but the show failed to grab attention. Despite a change in the female lead, the TRPs kept hitting south and ironically the female lead’s ill-health led to the abrupt closure of the show.
Muh Boli Shaadi Air time: 4 months
The love story of a rich girl (nmol) and a middle-class boy (Nikhil) and how they end up marrying each other secretively was filmi and predictable. The story line wasn’t exciting, add to that the lack of screen chemistry between the lead couple, resulted in show going off air.
Zindagi Wins Air time: 4 months
A medical drama moulded on the lines of Dill Mill Gayye, this one started off as a cute romance between two friends, but lost its spark halfway. In the absence of a convincing storyline, the show saw an influx of new characters yet it failed to strike a chord with the audiences and had to make an early exit.
Nisha Aur Uske Cousins Air time: 10 months
A story which had a mint-fresh approach revolved around a spunky tomboy’s bond with cousins, managed a decent RPs on and off. Even after a new male lead (Mishkat Varma) was roped in, the channel wasn’t keen on dragging the story and ended it on a happy note.
