Karwa Chauth is a celebration of love for us: Dheeraj & Vinny
For Dheeraj Dhoopar and his actress-wife , Karwa Chauth is “the expression and celebration of our love.” The Sasural Simar Ka actor shares, “Vinny fasts every year, and this is one of the best forms of love for each other. I have also insisted on fasting for her. But due to my hectic work schedules, she refuses to allow me to do that.”
Vinny adds, “I want to be the centre of attention on Karwa Chauth, with my fast and dressing up (laughs).”
‘Karwa Chauth also has a spiritual angle to it’ Vinny shares, “I celebrate the day and pray for my spouse’s long life. While there may be scientific reasons behind celebrating Karwa Chauth, I feel it also has a spiritual angle to it. Jis cheez ke liye aap itna sajo, fast rakho, it does fulfil that relationship. We celebrate the day with proper rituals every year.”
Dheeraj adds, “For us, every festival is special. It is celebrated as per rituals, and we adhere to what our elders have taught us.”
‘We buy Karwa Chauth gift together’ Asked about how he makes the day special for his wife, Dheeraj says, “I hope to fast for her someday. Since she doesn’t encourage it, I try to make her day easier. I manage things at home, from basic chores to dealing with house helps and taking care of our son Zayn. Basically, I try to keep Vinny as free and relaxed as possible.”
Talking about her special gift, Vinny shares, “I love jewellery, and every year, Dheeraj gifts me jewellery when I break my fast. Ab kaafi saal ho gaye hai saath mein, and I don’t believe in putting him under pressure regarding gifts. But he usually knows what he should gift. In fact, we go together to buy my Karwa Chauth gift every year (smiles).”
‘Days like Karwa Chauth help us stay connected to our ’ For Vinny, going all out on Karwa Chauth is a must. She says, “I love dressing up in sari, wearing shringar and following the rituals. Usually, we don’t get to wear sari often nowadays, but I do it on Karwa Chauth. I fast, pray and continue the traditions. Today, several young women say, ‘We’ll fast, but no sari.’ I feel if we want to celebrate festivals, we should do it properly.”
Dheeraj agrees, “How one celebrates festivals is their personal choice, but celebrating days like Karwa Chauth helps us stay connected to our roots and traditions. It also lays the foundation for the next generation.”
After fasting for the entire day, you don’t feel hungry at night either. But I break my fast with water and some sweets. We don’t go out to eat and have everything that my mom cooks. Eating rajma-chawal is a must on Karwa Chauth
-Vinny
Once, I was not around during Karwa Chauth and we celebrated it virtually. But otherwise, I try to wrap up my shoot early and be home by evening. There are always exceptions, especially if you are doing a daily soap, but we try to get free early on Karwa Chauth
