'It is not everyday that you hear a celebrity chef talk about street food of Ahmedabad and recollect the exact flavours of the Gwalior Dosa in Manek Chowk or recommending the kebabs at Bhatiyar Galli to his friends. But this love and inquisitiveness for food is exactly what defines chef Ranveer Brar.
Currently a judge on MasterChef India Season 4, Ranveer fondly recalls how he makes sure he visits friends every time he is in the city. “I am a huge fan of Manek Chowk and Bhatiyar Galli and I can recommend good restaurants to people who ask me where to eat in Ahmedabad — that’s how close I am to this city, despite not being from here. I have a lot of friends around here and am completely in love with the Parsi food here, although you get excellent Parsi dishes in Mumbai too!” Talking more about Gujarati cuisine, Brar says, “Lilva ni kachori, undhiyu and tum-tum khaman figure in the list of my favourite foods!”

For someone who calls himself a ‘food philosopher’ (he even mentions this on his business card!), Ranveer says, “I believe that food in intangible. It has the most basic relationship with human beings — hunger, everything else comes later. For me, food transfers feelings — which is why prasad tastes good and maa ke haath ka khana is unbeatable.” So how different is cooking before a camera as compared to cooking inside a kitchen. “Like a musician expresses himself through music and a writer’s expression is in his writings — cooking is my mode of expression. Television has given me a platform to express my passion and channelize my love for cooking in a new way and I am extremely happy with that. I am also open to exploring any other medium to express this love for cooking.” He adds, “I consider myself as a chef with little responsibility. People recognize me and so I have to be constantly aware of my surroundings and the responsibilities that come with being a public figure come onto me also.”
