Indian television is now all about big stars and bigger serials. But viewers, it seems, still miss the simple charm of TV shows like Buniyaad and Hum Log, which arrived on the small screen 25 years ago. In fact, many said theyd love to see it make a comeback. Reports of Dekh Bhai Dekh being made into a film have also created a lot of excitement. BT asks TV viewers which serials theyd like to see return to television.
Hum LogHum Log was the story of an Indian middle-class family of the 80s and its daily struggles and aspirations.
With 156 episodes, it is the second-longest-running serial in the history of Indian television after Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi. Hum Logs focus was on the joint family and various social issues, which even todays serials address. And nowadays, when the institution of the family is under pressure, serials like this should be telecast, says Sushma Joshi, housewife.
BuniyaadIt was a drama-series that dealt with the partition of India in 1947 and its aftermath. Directed by Ramesh Sippy, Buniyaad was first aired in 1986. I remember the famous dialogue from Buniyaad, Lajoji ne khaya badaam, usme se nikla Haveliram, Haveliram ne kholi almaari, usme se nikli Veeravaali, Veeravaali ne khaya paan, usme se nikla Vrishbhaan. The whole series beautifully captured the scene in 1947, says Pratima Garg, housewife.
NukkadThis 1986 serial dealt with the struggles of urban youth trying to make a living. The premise was that they all met at the local street corner (nukkad) and shared their life stories with each other. Though India has made a place for itself on the IT map, it hasnt been able to balance the unemployment ratio. Nukkad will be a good show for todays youth, who are coping with a lot of pressure, says Srinivas Krishnamurthy, retired bank officer.
FaujiFauji in 1988 was about daily life in an Indian army regiment. It focussed on a batch of trainees at a commando school, their training and eventual induction as soldiers. It had Shah Rukh Khan in the lead. I dont think todays youth is interested in pursuing a career in the army. Shows like Fauji may create interest among youth to join the army. It will definitely make a difference, with SRK in the lead, says Vipul K, businessman.
Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi/ Mungerilal ke Haseen SapneYeh Jo... revolved around the funny events in the lives of a couple and Mungerilal Ke... was about the life of Mungerilal, a small-time clerk who gets ordered around by his wife at home and by his boss at work. I dont remember watching a funny sitcom for a long time. There are a few shows but not as good as these, says Tanusha Singhania, student.
SwabhimaanDirected by Mahesh Bhatt and scripted by Shobhaa De, its about a womans fight for succession rights and property. They should air this show instead of K-serials. It truly depicted the strength of a woman, says Rajini Gulati, housewife.
