2020 recap: An eventful year for Kannada television industry

This year, with the lockdown and the pandemic, saw a lot of changes and happenings in the Kannada television industry. From the advent of dubbed television shows to stars making cameos to many shows going off air, here's a recap of the year that was for Kannada television.

Dubbing is here to stay

Malgudi Days by Shankar Nag became the game changer as far as the advent of dubbed shows went, with more shows following suit after that. Now, shows like Mahanayaka Dr BR Ambedkar, Paramavatari Sri Krishna and Nagakannike have become popular watches.

Shows go off air

Shows go off air: With the pandemic, shootings being called off and the advent of dubbed shows, many popular shows were discontinued on television. Among them were Magalu Janaki, Premaloka and Subbalakshmi Samsara.

Starry touch to shows


From Vasuki Vaibhav singing in a cameo in a mahasangama show to stars like Rishi and Manvita Kamath playing themselves in special appearances in shows, there were starry gimmicks put to use by television channels.

​Reality television doesn't stop


Shows like Sa Re Ga Ma Pa, Comedy Khiladigalu, Majaa Talkies and Majabharatha did not stop despite the pandemic and continued to enthrall fans with their star judges.

Covid deaths on sets

There were deaths due to Covid on television sets. One such was actor Hulivana Gangadharaiah, who was shooting Premaloka, succumbed to health complications due to Covid
