Madal Virupakshappa, a BJP MLA in Karnataka, was arrested by the Lokayukta police near Tumakuru on Monday evening in connection with an alleged bribery case. The arrest came after the Karnataka High Court rejected his anticipatory bail petition, stating that his custodial interrogation is necessary. The MLA and his associates were intercepted by the police while they were travelling from Channagiri to Bengaluru. Lokayukta police had previously arrested Virupakshappa's son, Prashanth Kumar, after he was caught accepting a bribe of Rs 40 lakh from a contractor. Virupakshappa has been named accused No. 1 in the case. The arrest is a significant development in the ongoing crackdown on corruption in the state.
