Devika Rani, often described as the first lady of the Indian cinema was an actress, set designer, costume designer and art director, all in one. She went on to head one of Hindi film industry’s leading studios, Bombay Talkies, which introduced actors like Ashok Kumar and Dilip Kumar, and headlined 15 of its productions. She grabbed headlines for one of the longest (a four-minute-long) kisses of Indian cinema in her 1933 film Karma.
