Kokila Kishorechandra Balsara aka Nirupa Roy was born on January 4, 1931, in Gujarat's Valsad. She was known to play the roles of those mothers (to big stars) who were bound to be helpless, seen praying for their children or were abandoned by her husband. Kokila got married to Kamal Roy at the age of 15 and later moved to Mumbai. In a 1983 Filmfare interview, Roy had said, 'I hadn't seen a film till I got married. My parents believed films were a corrupting influence. So only after coming to Bombay did I get to know what films were.' Nirupa Roy and husband Kamal Roy had both auditioned for a film, but Nirupa ended up bagging the role. That’s when her film journey started with the Gujarati movie 'Ranakdevi' (1946). The director of the film gave Roy her screen name of ‘Nirupa’. For more news and updates, stay tuned to ETimes.
