Sam Dalrymple, the author of ‘Shattered Lands: Five Partitions and the Making of Modern Asia’, explains how Jinnah, once an “ambassador of Hindu–Muslim unity”, evolved into the man who would not settle for anything less than a country only for Muslims. Few figures of modern South Asian history divide opinions like Muhammad Ali Jinnah. To Pakistan, he is Quaid-e-Azam, the father of the nation. To many in India, he is the man who divided a subcontinent and left it bleeding. But as writer Sam Dalrymple says, Jinnah was not a one-dimensional villain or saint. He was, in Sam’s words, “by far the most interesting figure that I did not expect to find as fascinating as I did while researching the book.”
