Hungary’s Minister for European Union Affairs, Janos Boka, has issued a grave warning that Ukraine’s accession to the European Union could push the entire bloc into armed conflict. Speaking in a wide-ranging interview, Boka cited Article 42 of the EU treaty — the mutual military assistance clause — arguing that its “creative interpretation” could effectively transform the EU into a military alliance and draw all member states into direct war with a nuclear power. He also warned that Europe’s political elite appears to be preparing for conflict by 2030, pointing to rising defence spending, renewed conscription, and escalating war rhetoric. The remarks come amid Hungary’s legal challenge against the EU’s planned ban on Russian energy imports and growing tensions over Ukraine’s path toward EU membership.
