Tensions are surging in the Strait of Hormuz after Iranian gunboats moved to confront a U.S.-flagged oil tanker in one of the world’s most critical maritime chokepoints. According to U.S. officials cited by The Wall Street Journal, as many as six armed Iranian boats ordered the tanker to shut down its engines and prepare to be boarded. The vessel instead accelerated, prompting a rapid U.S. Navy escort as British maritime authorities confirmed an incident north of Oman. Iran has offered a competing version of events, claiming the tanker briefly entered its waters and left after being warned. But U.S. Central Command says IRGC boats and an Iranian Mohajer drone approached the tanker M/V Stena Imperative at high speed and threatened to board it before a guided-missile destroyer intervened. The encounter comes as Iran’s naval leadership warns it could block the Strait if attacked, even as President Donald Trump increases U.S. military pressure while pushing Tehran toward nuclear negotiations.
