U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance has laid out the Trump administration’s blunt national security case for Greenland, arguing that control of the Arctic is essential to protecting the United States from potential missile threats. Speaking to reporters in Ohio, Vance said America’s entire missile defence architecture depends on Arctic security — a point he argued is often overlooked in the public debate. “Greenland matters to American national security because our entire missile defence relies on security in the Arctic,” Vance said, warning that any hostile missile launch toward the U.S. would require Arctic interception capabilities. “We would need control over the Arctic in order to shoot that missile down,” he added. Vance claimed that China, Russia, and even Denmark acknowledge the strategic value of Greenland, and warned that allowing rival powers influence over the island would weaken U.S. leverage and expose the country to direct threats. “That would make our country more endangered,” he said, arguing that sovereignty concerns are directly tied to America’s ability to negotiate from a position of strength.
