On any given day, approximately 3,000 Louisianans are sleeping on the streets. Orleans and Jefferson Parish, the two parishes that mostly make up the city of New Orleans, account for nearly half of that. Compared to other states, the Louisiana Housing Corporation tells The Associated Press that federal funds and Southern pride keep homeless numbers low. Local sports radio host Nader Mirfiq and his friends use a robust social media following to raise money for giveaways to New Orleans Saints fans and meals for the needy. Over the past two years, the friends have passed out more than 10,000 meals and other necessities. Mirfiq and his producers say they have already started working with local restaurants to continue their philanthropy.
