International Literacy Day, celebrated annually on September 8, is an opportunity for governments and civil society to highlight improvements in world literacy rates. The day was first proclaimed during the 14th session of UNESCO's General Conference in 1966 and has been celebrated every year since 1967. The theme for International Literacy Day 2019 is ‘Literacy and Multilingualism.’ The main characteristics of multilingualism in the current globalized and digitalized world will be discussed, along with their implications on policy and practice.
