The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) is transitioning to a digital payment system, with cash payments no longer accepted at institute counters from March 31. Besides electronic methods like UPI, debit cards, and credit cards, the AIIMS smart card, initiated on a pilot basis in collaboration with the State Bank of India from April 1, 2023, will be the sole means for payments across the institute. Cash will only be accepted at AIIMS smart card "top-up" counters, operational 24/7 at various locations within OPDs, hospitals, and centers. This move aims to streamline payments, enabling patients and attendants to avoid central registration counters. The decision was prompted by an outsourced service provider tampering with final discharge bills, leading to financial loss and distress for patients, as stated in an order issued by the AIIMS director.
