West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has directed all district magistrates to set up “holding centres” for apprehended illegal immigrants before their deportation. The move is aimed at implementing the BJP’s stated policy of “detect, delete and deport” illegal foreigners. An order issued by the state home department’s Foreigners’ Branch and SAARC Visa Section said the centres should be created in line with a May 2025 directive from the Union Home Ministry. The order applies to apprehended foreigners as well as released foreign prisoners awaiting deportation or repatriation. The development comes days after Adhikari chaired a meeting with BSF and police officials, where he pushed for action against illegal Bangladeshi immigrants and reviewed border fencing along open stretches of the India-Bangladesh border.
