China has defended its decision to rename places in Arunachal Pradesh, referring to the region as “Zangnan” or “Southern Tibet.” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun claimed that the area is part of China’s territory and that standardizing geographical names falls within its sovereign rights. He added that China does not recognize Arunachal Pradesh as established by India. Despite the disagreement, China emphasized that bilateral relations remain generally stable and expressed hope that both sides will work toward improving ties. India, however, has strongly rejected the move, calling the names “fictitious” and warning it could harm ongoing efforts to normalize relations between the two countries.
