BJP leader Brij Lal while commenting on the new criminal laws introduced by the Central government in the Parliament stated that while the intention behind the colonial-era laws like Indian Penal Code was to give “punishment”, the new laws will give “justice”. He added that the previous governments did not plan anything to reform the laws. He said, “The name was Indian Penal Code. The intention behind it was to give punishment. The intention behind the new laws is to give justice. Therefore, the name of the Indian Penal Code has been changed to Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. CrPC has been changed to Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita and the Indian Evidence Act has been changed to Bharatiya Sakshya Bill.”He added, “We are in Azaadi’s Amritkaal. The sad part is that previous governments did not plan anything to reform these laws.”Three Bills of momentous significance aimed at replacing British-era laws with a thrust on “justice instead of punishment” were introduced in Lok Sabha by Union Home Minister Amit Shah on the last day of the Monsoon Session of Parliament on August 11.
