The political row intensified after Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma asserted that India, while constitutionally open to all, would always have a Hindu Prime Minister. AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi countered the claim, saying such views reflect a narrow mindset and misunderstand the spirit of the Indian Constitution. Citing Dr B.R. Ambedkar, Owaisi said India places no religious bar on holding top constitutional posts and compared it with Pakistan, where leadership is restricted by faith. He reiterated his earlier remark that India could one day see a hijab-clad woman as Prime Minister. The BJP strongly objected to Owaisi’s comments, with spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla stating that the Constitution imposes no religious or dress restrictions and questioning Owaisi’s commitment to representation within his own party.
