During a House Foreign Affairs South and Central Asia Subcommittee hearing, Dhruva Jaishankar, Executive Director of the Observer Research Foundation America, outlined the current challenges in the US-India strategic partnership. He noted that trade disagreements remain a key obstacle, but emphasized that renewed US engagement with Pakistan’s military poses another critical challenge. Highlighting India’s experience with Pakistan-backed terrorist proxies, Jaishankar stressed that third-party mediation has often encouraged Pakistan’s aggressive actions. He explained that the US policy of de-hyphenation seeks to engage both countries while minimizing direct involvement in disputes. Jaishankar concluded that with effective management of trade and Pakistan-related differences, there is significant potential for deeper US-India collaboration in the future.
