Powerful quakes rock Turkey and Syria, rescue efforts continue
A powerful 7.8 magnitude earthquake rocked wide swaths of Turkey and Syria early morning. The initial quake was followed by more than 50 aftershocks, including 7.5 and 6-magnitude tremors. The 3 powerful earthquakes toppled hundreds of buildings and killed over 1,900 people. Hundreds of people are still believed to be trapped under the rubble and the death toll is suspected to rise. The epicentre of the first quake was near Nurdagi in Gaziantep province. The second and third quake was near Ekinozu and Goksun respectively in nearby Kahramanmaraş province. According to reports, cold weather has made rescue efforts more difficult. In 1939, the last 7.8-magnitude earthquake jolted Turkey, when 33,000 died in the eastern Erzincan province.
