Union Home Minister Amit Shah delivered a strong rebuttal in Lok Sabha as the Opposition pushed a no-confidence motion against Speaker Om Birla. Describing the move as rare and unfortunate, Shah said the Speaker’s chair represents the authority of the entire House and must remain above political battles. He reminded MPs that leaders from both treasury and Opposition benches had once escorted the Speaker to the Chair together, symbolising bipartisan trust. Shah argued that disagreements over rulings are part of democracy but attacking the Speaker’s neutrality could weaken the credibility of Parliament. He further warned that such confrontations might affect how India’s democratic institutions are perceived globally. The debate on the motion lasted more than thirteen hours and saw over forty MPs participating. The controversy has triggered a heated political battle, with the government accusing the Opposition of undermining parliamentary traditions while Opposition parties defend the motion as accountability in action.
