Wayanad Health Alert: 25 Students Admitted With Suspected Shigella Infection
A health alert has been issued in Kerala's Wayanad district after 25 students with suspected Shigella infection were admitted to the Sultan Bathery Taluk Headquarters Hospital. Kerala Health Minister K. Muraleedharan said the students are stable and under medical supervision.District Panchayat President Chandrika Krishnan said around 537 people have sought treatment across hospitals in the district. While most patients, including children, are recovering, some continue to experience fatigue and remain under observation.Health authorities have also confirmed two positive cholera cases from samples sent for testing. Officials said extensive sanitation and cleaning drives have been launched across Kalpetta Municipality and nearby panchayats, while additional medical staff and facilities have been deployed.State Minister T. Siddique said the situation is under control. Investigations have begun in 12 institutions linked to the affected students, and a district-wide chlorination drive will be carried out to prevent further spread of water-borne diseases.
