Protests were being reported from across the country after Friday prayers and Prayagraj was no exception. The protests in Prayagraj turned violent on June 10. Javed Mohammad, the alleged 'mastermind' associated with the Welfare Party of India, was arrested by the UP police on June 11; along with his wife and daughter. Mohammad's residence was demolished by the Prayagraj Development Authority on June 12. According to a government official, the structure violated UP State Planning and Development Rules, 1973 and hence, was illegal. During the demolition, the police seized some weapons and found provocative posters. Later, it was learned that the house belonged to his wife Parveen. Sumaiya Fatima, Javed Mohammad's daughter spoke out in his defence. On June 15, the names of Prashant Bhushan and five senior advocates appeared in an unsigned letter, appealing to the apex court to step in.
