Mahabharat’s 'Bheem' aka Praveen Kumar Sobti dies of massive cardiac arrest

Actor and athlete Praveen Kumar Sobti who played the iconic role of Bheem in BR Chopra's 'Mahabharat' left for his heavenly abode at the age of 74 following a cardiac arrest. Confirming the news a relative of Parveen Kumar Sobti told a news agency, 'He has a chronic chest infection problem. At night when he started feeling uneasy we called the doctor at home. He passed away at 10-10:30 pm following a cardiac arrest'. He is survived by a wife, daughter, two brothers and a sister. He started his acting career with a movie directed by Ravikant Nagaich where he did not have any dialogue. However, later he did several films including Amitabh Bachchan’s 'Shahenshah' where he played the role of Mukhtaar Singh. Karishma Kudrat Kaa, Yudh, Zabardast, Singhasan, Khudgarz, Loha, Mohabbat Ke Dushman, Ilaaka were some of his known work. In 1988, he was roped in to play the iconic role of Bheem in BR Chopra's 'Mahabharat'. Hailing from Punjab, Parveen Kumar respresented India across various athletic events in hammer and discus throw and also won four medals at the Asian Games, including two gold medals in 1966 and 1970. He also won a silver medal in Hammer Throw during the 1966 Commonwealth Games. He was the recipient of several awards in sports including Arjuna award. He even got the job of Deputy Commandant in the Border Security Force (BSF). Praveen Kumar also tried his hands in politics. He first joined Aam Aadmi Party but later switched to Bhartiya Janta Party after losing the assembly elections from Wazirpur constituency in Delhi in 2013.
