Remembering Catherine O’Hara through her most iconic films and shows: 'Schitt's Creek', 'Home Alone', and more

Hollywood lost a gem on Friday, January 30, as legendary actor Catherine O’Hara passed away at the age of 71. The beloved actor was known for her iconic roles in many of the classic films, like ‘Home Alone’, ‘Beetlejuice’, and ‘Best in Show.’ Catherine O’Hara was also a part of many TV shows. Her role as the eccentric Moira Rose in ‘Schitt’s Creek’ was loved by many, and also, most recently, she played the role of a former studio chief, Patty Leigh, in ‘The Studio.’

‘Second City Television’

The TV show aired from 1976 to 1984 and marked Catherine O’Hara’s breakout role. In this Canadian sketch comedy series, O’Hara worked alongside John Candy, Eugene Levy, Andrea Martin, Rick Moranis, and Martin Short. Her character as Lola Heatherton received a lot of praise.

‘Schitt’s Creek’

Starring as Moira Rose, the former soap star and eccentric matriarch of a once-wealthy family forced to rebuild their lives in a small town they bought as a joke, O’Hara won an Emmy for her role in the CBC/Pop TV comedy.

The show was created by Dan and Eugene Levy. In ‘Schitt’s Creek’, O’Hara co-starred alongside Eugene Levy, Dan Levy, and Annie Murphy. The comedy show ran from 2015 to 2020.

‘Home Alone’

In the 1990 Christmas classic, Catherine O’Hara played the role of Kate McCallister, Kevin McCallister’s (Macaulay Culkin) mother. In the iconic holiday film, she starred alongside John Heard, Daniel Stern, Joe Pesci, and more.

‘Home Alone’ follows eight-year-old Kevin, when his big, chaotic family leaves for the holiday, and he somehow gets left behind. What follows is a series of comedic episodes and Kevin realising what he truly wants.

‘A Series of Unfortunate Events’

In the 2017 dark-comedy adaptation of Lemony Snicket’s best-selling novel, Catherine O’Hara played the role of Dr. Georgina Orwell, who is a sinister hypnotist.

‘A Series of Unfortunate Events’ is about three orphans, Violet, Klaus, and Sunny Baudelaire, pursued by the villainous Count Olaf, played by Neil Patrick Harris.

‘The Nightmare Before Christmas’

In Tim Burton’s 1993 film ‘The Nightmare Before Christmas,’ Catherine O’Hara lent her voice to Sally, a Halloween Town rag doll who finds herself infatuated by Jack Skellington (Chris Sarandon). In 2023, the actress performed “Sally’s Song” at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, 30 years after the film first debuted.
