STORY: Three friends in their forties hook up with young boys while on vacation. How far will their raunchy, forbidden romance go?REVIEW: In one of the scenes, a 20-something dude tries to patronise the film’s three leading ladies by saying, “MILF is a compliment. Cougars are on the prowl whereas a MILF isn’t looking for anything.” Anyone who knows what MILF stands for (Mothers I Love to F**K) will agree that it is far from a compliment, but to debutante director Axelle Laffont (who also plays Elise), this is comedy. However, MILF is far from funny and full of such lame pick-up lines. There’s one where another young dude compares the size of his older flame’s breasts with that of his mother’s. These unfunny moments take place at one of the sun-kissed resort towns on the French Riviera (or Côte d'Azur). Cecile (Virginie Ledoyen) lands there with her besties Sonia (Marie-Josée Croze) and Elsie (Axelle Laffont) to sell her old villa, but the trio end up getting involved with a bunch of handsome and athletic young boys high on lust and libido. It’s refreshing to see a bunch of ladies lead a plot that is usually explored by men, but MILF doesn’t lift itself beyond steamy sex scenes and low-brow humour that is mostly tasteless. There are times when the narrative tends to become emotional, but the writing is so poor that you barely feel any emotion for any of the characters. While the women still have some sort of a past with characters that are slightly better etched, the men are simply there as eye-candy.Director Axelle Laffont is the most convincing as the single mother Elise trying to make sense of her newfound passion with a younger man. The other two ladies struggle with similar emotions without much headway, which explains why the film feels like such a drag. The boys Paul (Wael Sersoub), Julien (Matthias Dandois) and Markus (Victor Meutelet), who run a sailing school, immediately fall for the women. According to them, the ladies are a little past the expiry date but “not bad” for an old piece of ass. Soon after, all three men conveniently find a match for themselves in the three older yet equally lissome ladies. The story keeps rotating around their multiple encounters, but there’s never an engaging conflict or a major plot twist before a predictably bittersweet climax. There’s more fun in the friendship dynamic between women and the men themselves that sadly isn’t explored well. A few early scenes like when the ladies flash a police officer in a moving car or when they go skinny dipping in the middle of the night are entertaining. MILF starts off as a seductively amusing film, but with a mediocre script, it soon ends up being bland and offensive that’s neither sexy nor funny.
