Amid rising tensions in West Asia, Jordan’s foreign minister Ayman Safadi will visit Iran on Sunday. According to the Iranian state media, minister Safadi will discuss the latest regional happenings with his Iranian counterpart.
This meeting comes after the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in the capital city of Iran, Tehran, on Wednesday. One day before, Israel killed Faud Shukr in a strike conducted in Beirut. He was a senior military commander of Hezbollah, an Iranian-backed terrorist group based in Lebanon.
Tensions in the region are at an all-time high as Israel is being blamed by both Hamas and Iran for the assassination of Haniyeh. Although, Israel has neither claimed responsibility for the death of Haniyeh nor denied it, however, both parties have pledged to retaliate against Israel.
In the backdrop of this meeting, continuous diplomatic efforts were made to prevent further escalation by the Western world and its partners such as the US, Britain, France, Italy, and Egypt.
Iran and Jordan are also looking to improve their relations following recent tensions. Jordan had accused pro-Iranian militias in Syria of smuggling narcotics into the country. Additionally, Jordan participated in intercepting Iran’s first-ever direct attack on Israel last April.
