Nepal quiet as two-day strike begins
KATHMANDU: A two-day strike called by Maoist rebels went into effect early on Tuesday, shutting down the Himalayan Kingdom.
The streets of Kathmandu were deserted as vehicles stayed off the roads. Schools, businesses and offices also remained shut. Only government offices are open, and commuters could be seen walking briskly on the streets to reach their offices.
The strike has been called by the Maoists who are demanding the government make public the wherabouts of their captured comrades.
The government has responded by appealing to open all businesses and schools and promising compensation if property is damaged.
"The government will provide prompt compensation to any vehicle or business owner whose property is damaged during the strike," said minister for information Mohammed Mohsin. "We appeal everyone to go about their normal lives."
