“What grieving wife looks like this”: Erika Kirk draws fierce online backlash after making a pointed joke about Candace Owens
Erika Kirk is facing renewed public scrutiny after a remark she made at Turning Point USA’s AmericaFirst Fest ignited backlash across social media. The event was meant to honor the legacy of her late husband, Charlie Kirk, but a brief moment of humor during her speech quickly became the focal point of online criticism.
While the live audience appeared receptive, many viewers watching clips afterward felt the joke was poorly timed and emotionally jarring.
According to attendees, Erika Kirk was forced to improvise much of her speech after her iPad deleted her final draft. While reviewing printed statistics about international representation at the event, she made a quip that referenced Candace Owens’ repeated claims involving Egypt.
“I have the list here. Don’t worry, guys, Egypt is NOT on the list,” she joked, later adding, “Oh, how funny! I say Egypt, and my iPad turns on.” The comment alluded to Owens’ widely criticized conspiracy theories, which have linked Egypt to Charlie Kirk’s death despite a lack of evidence.
Although the crowd laughed, the reaction online was swift and unforgiving. Critics accused Erika of appearing too lighthearted so soon after her husband’s death. One commenter wrote, “I can’t imagine being on stage, trying to make fake jokes…just three months after my husband was publicly assassinated.” Another asked bluntly, “Sorry, but what grieving wife looks like this?” A third summed up the mood with, “She’s already cracking jokes about her husband’s assassination? Too soon, babe.”
The moment also highlighted the ongoing rift between Erika and Owens, once close allies. Since September, Owens has repeatedly floated theories involving Egyptian aircraft and surveillance, even claiming she discussed them in a four-and-a-half-hour private conversation with Erika. Despite those claims, no concrete evidence has emerged to support the allegations.
So far, Erika has not publicly addressed the backlash. In recent interviews, however, she has suggested she is finished responding to online critics. Still, the incident has reignited debate over grief, public expectations, and whether political stages are the right place for humor tied to deeply personal tragedy.
