After his visit to France upon President Emmanuel Macron's invitation, Modi will be among the first global leaders to visit the US following Trump's inauguration on January 20, after his victory in the November elections. Officials have noted that this visit offers a prime opportunity to connect with the new administration across numerous areas of shared interest.
During a press briefing on February 7, foreign secretary Vikram Misri emphasised that the Prime Minister's US visit, following President Trump's invitation, showcases the importance of India-US relations and indicates the bipartisan support this partnership enjoys in the US.
The itinerary included Modi's engagements with business leaders and the Indian diaspora in the US.
The Prime Minister will hold bilateral talks with President Trump in both restricted and delegation-level formats. The discussions are anticipated to address various bilateral issues, along with deliberations on regional and international developments.
The Foreign Secretary highlighted the mutual interests shared by both nations across various sectors, including commerce, defence, technology transfer, fighting terrorism, Indo-Pacific security and cultural exchanges.
The diplomatic engagement aims to strengthen the bonds between India and the US through enhanced bilateral relations.
The Foreign Secretary, Misri, emphasised the significant role of the Indian diaspora, noting "The 5.4 million-strong Indian community in the US and the more than 3,50,000 students from India who are pursuing studies in universities strengthen this bond immeasurably."
He indicated that the Prime Minister's US visit would provide fresh impetus to this strategic partnership, with plans to issue a joint declaration upon its conclusion.
This marks the Prime Minister's initial visit following Trump's second term commencement on January 20.
The Foreign Secretary explained that following the President's inauguration, the Prime Minister extended his congratulations via telephone, during which both leaders committed to arranging this meeting.
