Former republican representative Liz Cheney linked a connection between the 'dangerous' turmoil within the House GOP and the behavior of former President
Donald Trump, along with the Republicans who continue to support him, reports CNN.
Cheney in a Sunday interview with CNN's Jake Tapper said, "I wish that it were surprising. You know, what we’ve seen is a result of really the leadership decisions that
Kevin McCarthy made back after the 2020 election and certainly after January 6.
And, you know, looking the other way in the face of the kind of assault on our democracy that we’ve seen from Donald Trump and his allies in the House."
Cheney's remarks comes amidst the ongoing high-stakes speakership battle within the House GOP, following McCarthy's removal over two weeks ago.
The narrow majority of the GOP has created uncertainty about whether any candidate can secure the 217 votes required to become the House Speaker.
Cheney, known for her strong criticism of Trump while in Congress, also voiced her concern about the resurgence of political violence and threats within politics. She emphasized that these elements have become an unwelcome part of the political landscape.
Several Republicans who opposed Jordan's bid for the House speakership reported receiving angry calls, threatening messages, and even death threats after casting their votes.
Cheney further said, "Now, that kind of acceptance of violence is completely inappropriate and dangerous in our politics. So, I – we need people who are serious and who recognize and understand the dangers that we’re facing globally, as well as from Donald Trump and those who support him."
