Buckley Carlson, the son of conservative media personality Tucker Carlson, has been appointed deputy press secretary to
US vice president JD Vance, reported ABC News. Carlson’s move marks his continued rise within Republican political circles, where he has served in various staff roles since 2019.
Buckley Carlson began his Capitol Hill career as a staff assistant for Rep Jim Banks (R-Ind), eventually becoming communications director in 2021 and deputy chief of staff in 2022. Carlson is credited with helping Banks navigate high-profile legislative priorities during his tenure.
According to ABC News, Carlson’s hiring places him under Taylor Van Kirk, the vice president’s press secretary, who has worked closely with Vance since his 2022 Senate campaign.
Carlson’s hiring is part of a broader restructuring of Vice President Vance’s senior staff.
As per The Hill, Vance has brought on trusted allies from his Senate tenure, including Jacob Reses as chief of staff and Ben Moss as director of domestic policy. This cohesive team underscores Vance’s strategic approach as he continues to champion the Trump administration’s agenda.
Buckley Carlson’s appointments have occasionally drawn criticism centred around
nepotism, according to The Dail Beast. Past reports revealed an alleged attempt by Tucker and Susan Carlson to seek assistance from
Hunter Biden in securing Buckley’s admission to Georgetown University. The email surfaced during Hunter Biden’s email leak but was dismissed by Tucker Carlson as “Russian disinformation.”
Despite these controversies, Carlson’s supporters, including Donald Trump Jr, have defended his qualifications and work ethic. They assert his career progression reflects merit rather than privilege.
Tucker Carlson remains a significant figure in conservative circles, maintaining close ties with Donald Trump and participating in the former president’s campaign events. According to The Wrap, Tucker’s political stature may bolster Buckley’s prominence as he steps into a critical communications role for US vice president Vance.
